Language, the collective understanding and meaning of words
As one traverses the world you will find an entire host of different languages. These languages have been developed and/or adopted by a group of resident citizens as the agreed upon way in-which that city, country, and region are going to communicate. Within that language you can find or be exposed to a series of sub-languages built upon a regional or national language. For example, in the United States, the meanings and pronunciation of English words is different depending on what part of the country you are in. In some rare cases the pronunciation is so drastically different from region to region, it can make it difficult to understand, however, for individuals living within a respective region, those pronunciations have meaning. Within these different regions and countries and through-out the world there are different professions. These professions lead to the development of organizations whom leverage professional skills to provide a service or produce a product for income. Within these professions one will find a unique language giving meaning to technical or abstract concepts. In aviation an example of this type of professional lingo is the idea of weight and balance. To an individual that doesn't understand the various concepts associated with aviation will likely be confused when they hear the term. What does 'weight' and 'balance' have to do with an airplane flying? How can it be good? how is it bad? how can it be changed? why may it need to be changed? etc. Within aviation, a professional or even amateur pilot will have a shared understanding of the concept weight and balance, that person will quickly understand what is meant by 'the weight and balance is bad.' This is an example of a concept that transcends the profession. A concept that would transcend organizations is dispatch. Dispatch is the means by which large commercial airliners control departing and arriving flights. The concept is a federally mandated requirement, however the words to describe it can change from organization to organization. For example, in one organization their dispatch could be referred to as the flight operations center, another organization might refer to dispatch as the dispatch center, another might refer to it as daily ops, and yet another might refer to it as operational flow control. All different words or combination of words, all referencing the same concept or idea.
The concepts of weight and balance and dispatch are shared across the entire profession, however how they are presented differs from organization to organization. The communication of these concepts is made by professionals within aviation, both communicating with pilots and dispatchers (whether given a different title or name) the concept remains the same. Having a shared understanding of these concepts enables clear communication and develops a shared understanding of the current circumstance or circumstances facing a flight, thus leading to the making of safe decisions. Retaining a professional environment where communication is limited to these topics helps retain the professionalism of the environment and prevent barriers to communication such as lies and rumors, from influencing, or negatively impacting the share of information. This is crucial because the decisions being made by pilots and dispatchers have serious implications in terms of life and death, and property loss.
